Greg
LeSage's path to UWGB start near Ft. Knox, Kentucky.
He was a 6-8 late bloomer at
Elizabethtown High School. He
redshirted at Georgetown, Kentucky, a D2 program.
Despite being an honor role
student in high school his year at Georgetown had him registering a 1.9
GPA
He headed to Ohio has his mom had
moved and enrolled at Columbus State. Grades
not basketball took center stage. That
was the summer of 2007.
A chance pick up game changed his
plans to move back to the Bluegrass State.
Columbus State coach Pat
Carlisle, saw
the potential that day. "I
said to myself, 'This kid looks like a Division I basketball player."
For the past two seasons LeSage
has been the Cougars starting center.
That first season he averaged
nearly a double, double. The
team finished in second place nationally. The
Cougars were the best JUCO team in Ohio this past season and made it to
the national tournament again. LeSage
average 13.8 points and nearly 8 rebounds in 08-09.
A list that included Horizon
league rivals Cleveland State, Illinois-Chicago and Youngstown State were
after LeSage. In
addition he was courted by Oral Roberts, Marshall, Central Michigan, The
Citadel, Long Island, Marshall, and St. Bonaventure.
The edge in the recruiting battle
may have been LeSage's family history. His
dad, a former career military man, is from Green Bay and has moved back to
his hometown. There a few few dozen LeSage relatives living in the
area.
What kind of player is Green Bay
getting? Coach
Carlisle puts it this way, "Day in and day out, he's probably our
hardest worker. He
is the kind of kid you would want your son to grow up to be."
