Milwaukee Vincent star Bryquis Perine plays for former Nix point guard Tom Diener.

Bryquis Perine showed his potential early on.  Nearly two years ago in a high profile AAU contest the Milwaukee Vincent senior scored 25 points against the Memphis Elite.  The total included seven 3 pointers.

No wonder the UWGB coaching staff camped out at his AAU and high school games.  The problem was the Nix coaches had a lot of competition for the smooth shooting lefty.  At the Addidas Superstar Camp where the country’s top high school talent and college coaches gathered Perine was getting instant messages on his cell phone from suitors.  The same was true at another national AAU tournament in Las Vegas .

The recruiting battle appears to have gone to UWGB because of the commitment of the coaching staff.  Perine was clearly the Nix top in state recruiting target.

Troy Cotton Sr. is the head of the Development Through Athletics AAU team that Perine plays for.  In an interview with Wishoops.com Cotton talked about the legwork involved in GB getting a commitment from Perine.  “Coach Kowalczyk did a very good job of recruiting Bryquis.  Coach Kowalczyk showed Bryquis that he was their man by showing up for all of our games on the AAU circuit.

Cotton’s son plays for UWGB.  Another key Phoenix family is Perine’s Milwaukee Vincent High School coach.  Tom Diener is a former Nix player himself.  Diener calls Perine a gym rat who just needs to add weight and strength to his 6-3 frame to reach his potential.  Diener is one the most successful high school coaches in Wisconsin with a fist full of state titles.  He’s seen a lot of good prep players.  “I think Bryquis can potentially be an all-conference player in the Horizon League.”

Perine has been consistently ranked as the fifth or sixth best player in the state by Mark Miller’s Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook.  The UWGB recruit’s stats may have suffered because of the talent surrounding him on the Vincent High School team which has five legitimate Division One players including 6-4 point guard Diante Garrett, an Iowa State recruit.

In college the GB coaches look to Perine to play strong perimeter defense, provide firepower and even move into the small forward spot at times.
